All assignments should be curvable, yes. For now, the only thing that is curve-able is Exam assignments, which have a dedicated field for it (namely, the grade on question N+1, when there are N questions). But I'd like there to be a few built-in automated presets -- some that I can think of off the top of my head:

  • "Here's the desired mean and stddev; go fix"
  • max_points * (grade / max_points)^(1/curve_strength) (which is a general image-brightening curve)
  • grade + N points

I think the easiest way to handle this is probably to have a CurveGrader and some subclasses thereof...

For exams, questions and code-review assignments, it would be great to have a per-question curve configuration. Eg to devalue a question that was too hard, or to regrade one question independently of the others.

For files assignments, I'm not sure exactly what the curve might be, or where to store it. (It probably makes sense to stop using question n+1 for the curve, and use a dedicated field in all submissions instead.) This is also tied to the ability to migrate Bonus comments from one manual grader to another, extra credit grader -- or else the curved grade will be computed incorrectly.
