You need to include your source file. 10 years from now when someone
actually looks at the github reports, no one will know what version of the
file you were using.

The python code above is very nice. The python code below is not. But
all of the python code is missing the dots in the metavariables. Perhaps
a problem of your mailer.

Should this number of function calls be finally found by such a source code analysis?

The previously shown static code analysis can also be tested with other source files on demand for further comparisons.

   Basic firmware description. This will remain with
   the driver for documentation purposes.

   This represents an I2C firmware file encoded as a
   string of unsigned char. Format is as follows:

   char[0  ]=len0_MSB  -> len = len_MSB * 256 + len_LSB
   char[1 ]=len0_LSB -> length of first write transaction
   char[2 ]=data0 -> first byte to be sent
   char[3  ]=data1
   char[4  ]=data2
   char[   ]=...
   char[M ]=dataN -> last byte to be sent
   char[M+1]=len1_MSB  -> len = len_MSB * 256 + len_LSB
   char[M+2]=len1_LSB -> length of second write transaction
   char[M+3]=data0
   char[M+4]=data1
   ...
   etc.

   The [len] value should be interpreted as follows:

   len= len_MSB _ len_LSB
   len=1111_1111_1111_1111   : End of I2C_SEQUENCE
   len=0000_0000_0000_0000 : Reset command: Do hardware reset
   len=0NNN_NNNN_NNNN_NNNN   : Normal transaction: number of bytes = {1:32767)
   len=1WWW_WWWW_WWWW_WWWW : Wait command: wait for {1:32767} ms

   For the RESET and WAIT commands, the two following bytes will contain
   immediately the length of the following transaction.

But all of the python code is missing the dots in the metavariables.

Which information did you miss really?

Perhaps a problem of your mailer.

Is an other software involved here?

I would like add two details for further considerations.

  1. Another command parameter:

    elfring@Sonne:~/Projekte/Linux/next-patched> spatch.opt --noif0-passing --sp-file ~/Projekte/Coccinelle/janitor/replace_printk2j.cocci drivers/media/tuners/xc5000.c | grep function | wc -l
    …
    35

  2. How should source code which does not belong to a function implementation be handled by scripts for the semantic patch language?

    Example:

    #define dprintk(level, fmt, arg...) if (debug >= level) \
    printk(KERN_INFO "%s: " fmt, "xc5000", ## arg)
    …

Would you like to send another bug report to GitHub?

The Coccinelle C parser is not able to parse this.

With which syntax element does it get difficulties so far?

The code will be skipped over.

How do you think to improve your software in the way that function calls can be also analysed when they will occasionally appear within preprocessor definitions?

Does the current handling of expression (or parameter) lists point any further software development challenges out?

Not really. I don't know where the problem is. Your mailer, my mail
reader, something about github, etc.

  The Coccinelle C parser is not able to parse this.

With which syntax element does it get difficulties so far?

There is a n if and then a function call with no semicolon. The proper
way to do this is to use a do while with no semicolon at the end, and
Coccinelle can parse that. But it can't parse arbitrary statements with
no semicolons.

  The code will be skipped over.

How do you think to improve your software in the way that function calls
can be also analysed when they will occasionally appear within preprocessor
definitions?

The function calls can, if and only if the right hand side of the macro
can be parsed.
