It is a bad practice to use npm with sudo, please install nvm first and then use
npm i gritty -g

Nothing wrong, it just do not have rights to write to directories like /usr cous owner of this directory is root so you should use sudo. About this error, I have no idea :), you can create issue on npm.comunity.com
