Hi Roger,

Did you use the last release 1.1.3 published 2 days ago?

I recommend you to use it and define your meta descriptions like this:

metadata:
    author: 'Roger J Parkinson'
description: 'Discusses whether animals feel pain or is that an anthropological illusion.'
    keywords: 'animals, neurons, emotion'
'twitter:description': 'Discusses whether animals feel pain or is that an anthropological illusion.'
'og:description': 'Discusses whether animals feel pain or is that an anthropological illusion.'

I let you test it and come back to me to tell me the result (before closing this issue).

"Did you use the last release 1.1.3 published 2 days ago?"
Yes. Also while troubleshooting I deleted the existing version and reinstalled. Grav admin tells me it is 1.1.3

I changed my meta descriptions (copy paste) as you suggested. But no change. I still see only twitter:description with the right text. Twitter:description is correct with or without quotes around the key ie

twitter:description: 'Discusses whether animals feel pain or is that an anthropological illusion.'

The other two are both incorrect (as before)

Secondary question: it seems odd that I should have to specify the same text 3 times, even if it worked. Surely one of them should be enough?

This is strange !

I'm tested your frontmatter meta configuration and it works fine with me.

Maybe a caching problem: If you use it, try to delete cache content.

Otherwise, what is your Grav version?

About your question "it seems odd that I should have to specify the same text 3 times, even if it worked. Surely one of them should be enough?"

No, because description is based first on site description configuration and second on page summary.
This plugin offers to user to overwrite meta configuration by frontmatter header page. It is the initial strategy. So, for each meta field, a frontmatter key shall be defined.

But it is maybe interresting to add configuration will allow apply the main meta description to all social description.

Great!

About repetitions, I understand the concern.
But some people want to specify different description for Twitter and Facebook.

I think a good deal is to add a configuration description directly in frontmatter header page (not in metatag.description) and to use it for all descriptions if it is defined.

@RogerParkinson I published a new release 1.2.0 where configuration of description in frontmatter header is simplified.

This improvment is tracked in Issue #7 .
