We should probably rethink outputting in general as it's not exactly consistent right now between the various versions of Clawpack. This would easily be overcome if we always output to a netcdf/hdf file. We need to agree on an ascii output format for all the pieces before going ahead with this I think. Maybe something where there's a file that's always ascii output that may contain the aux_global data and then the other file contains the aux and q arrays as specified with apropriate masks (not output certain fields).

Kyle, I understand your concerns. But the idea here is to have something
that works now so we can release 1.0. Are you prepared to tackle the
larger problem right now? If not, I think fixing this small issue
immediately is very worthwhile.

I think the larger problem has been discussed but no solution has been agreed upon. The eventual solution should be decided by claw-dev in general.
In the mean time, you are correct and a global auxiliary file can be written out easily enough. I will take care of it.

Thanks. Perhaps a separate issue should be raised regarding what you wrote
above, with links to corresponding issues in the other Clawpack trackers.

Just an update, we're still interested in adding this capability to the ASCII I/O routines.
