cakephp's loading of views has changed a while ago. Unfortunately you have to do a bit more configuration. Update the plugin and reread carefully the docs and adapt your setup.

In README.md you have a typo :
$routes->extensions([''xlsx']); => $routes->extensions(['xlsx']);
from excel.
