Automatic updates from the non-store-hosted .crx file should be working for those not using Chrome on Windows.

I see. Why not make that the main link in your install instructions then? It's a bit confusing, and installing just the crx file is always a hassle.

Because I don't think people should be dependent on Google's permission to install stuff on their own computers.
