The delete vs destroy behavior all comes down to how CarrierWave integrates with ActiveRecord. All of CarrierWave's persistence methods are triggered by callbacks, and callbacks are only triggered when you use destroy. I'm glad you worked it out though!

And in a potential answer to my own problem, it seems like the destroy method does delete the image, but delete doesn't.
