Ah, fair. I didn't know that crate existed (guess I should have searched harder).
I'm also trying to avoid the extra dep (already had bstr), so I do sympathize.

My main thought here is: why not use bytecount
for this, if extreme performance is that important? This is what ripgrep uses to count lines, for example.
It would be plausible for bstr to take on a dependency for bytecount
, but I am trying desperately not to add more dependencies.
