This is deliberate - you shouldn't be able to use other formula columns inside formula columns because it could cause a dependency cycle, and whichever column is forced to "go first" would not have proper values.
Free typing it works because the values (at least for static formulas) are actually there, but we don't want them used since it would cause formulas to fail if you made 2 formulas depend on each other.
