Nanoswarms won't be implemented in the current system as I'm not adding any more features and I never got them to a workable state. They will be a thing in the rewrite. I'm not actually sure how people compensate for their absence. You could ask in the discord for what workarounds others use, but what you are currently doing may be the best there is.
