I picked up the convention of using X.Y on development branches from work. Release branches (like 0.1.x) use X.Y.Z version numbers. Z only gets incremented on release branches. Y is the smallest thing that gets incremented on development branches. Strange, I know. When I'm feeling particularly evil, I consider just using "master-SNAPSHOT" on the master branch. ;-)

… but then, I've been investigating git-flow, which would really turn things around because then master would be the production branch and would always have a non-snapshot X.Y.Z version. But I'm not quite ready to jump ship from what I'm used to.

OK I get it - so the release versions will still be named something like 0.1.3? If so this makes sense.

I'm more used to doing it with maven-release-plugin which auto-numbers in X.Y.Z style but I guess it doesn't really make much of a difference.
