Lol. Let's just ignore this. If somebody is using a font that makes it impossible to read code then it's not our responsibility to try to bail them out.

What is ambiguous about it? AFAICS l is only used in one way in each function.

It's just against the PEP 8 Style Guide I used to format my python reference.
I don't want to change the code I borrowed from the BIP unless it matches but PEP 8 suggests to use 'L' instead of 'l' because of font issues.

Names to Avoid
Never use the characters ‘l’ (lowercase letter el), ‘O’ (uppercase letter oh), or ‘I’ (uppercase letter eye) as single character variable names.

In some fonts, these characters are indistinguishable from the numerals one and zero. When tempted to use ‘l’, use ‘L’ instead.
