this issue was resolved by the creation of a web interface (which is, of course, platform agnostic). there are two that i know of:
the one by MassDrop:

the one by Zalusithix (on GeekHack):

as of this writing, Zalusithix's is the more comprehensive, but still unfinished (incapable of building a firmware for download). MassDrop's is prettier, and can save/load layouts, and generate .hex files for download, but the numlock layer does not behave as expected. hopefully these issues will be resolved in time. till then, at least using the UIs is easier than editing the source :) - unless of course you're used to doing tedious stuff in C, lol
also, slightly related: the layouts should be much easier to modify in the source once the rewrite is complete. though it's looking like that might be a while... :/
