OK, so I've filed this with the assumption that CentOS has variants, but after consulting their freenode channel, that could be wrong. And turns out that even /etc/os-release does not have VARIANT= on CentOS 7.
So this might be invalid.

OK, so there is this 4 year old page [Variants proposal][1]; but Variant concept is not discussed on eg. Download page, so it seems that they indeed don't have Variants.
Now the question that remains is: what should rlGetDistroVariant() do if there's no such thing as variant on a distro? Return one? Log an error?
