I have got this error on:

• Windows 10 with RN59.9 (used https://romannurik.github.io/AndroidAssetStudio/icons-launcher.html instead)
• macOS 10.15.6 (Catalina) with RN59.9

With RN63.3 it is working on both platforms.

I have a RN 0.59 app which I didn't want to upgrade. So the solution for me was changing the launch_screen.xml like this:

  xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
  android:layout_width="match_parent"
  android:layout_height="match_parent"
  android:orientation="vertical"
>
  <ImageView 
    android:src="@drawable/launch_screen"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent"
    android:scaleType="centerCrop"
  >
  </ImageView>
</FrameLayout>
