I think I've effectively included this without realizing it. In order to authorize the Slack App to do things like the fancy buttons in #7 I had to do a lot of the same OAUTH stuff.

That's really cool but doesn't look exactly like the same thing. What I was envisioning was for new user registrations. On the register screen there would be a "Login with Slack" option if enabled, much like many sites do with other social networks. Typically other social login plugins simply pull profile data from the separate app like Facebook and use that to populate a new WP user registration. In our case it might also do things like populate a new user meta field with their Slack username so that we could potentially associate WP activity with the right user in Slack when posting notifications. Example: "New product submission by @someslackuser123" so in the notification that user was tagged with their Slack username. And also we could do things like DM those users based on WP activity that pertains to them. Those are all future ideas that would be possible if the user, upon registration or even after, linked their Slack account to their WP user.

Ah, that's right. I remember talking to you about this now. I had just looked at the link you provided and what they were describing worked the same way as what I did but just asked for fewer permissions.
