Compose doesn't touch the device.js
Compose only composes certain files to app.json.
If you mean it installs meshdriver vs zwave driver, then that is based on your SDK version mentioned in your app.json and that you have "zwave" in your plugin file, v2 and before installs meshdriver, v3 and up installs z-wave driver as that is really recommended for sdkv3, but z-wave driver is written for sdkv3, not sdkv2 and before, so I think that doesn't work
So in short,
Mesh driver is Homey v2 - Homey v4 (still supported in v5)
Z-wave driver is Homey v1 (deprecated) and rewritten for Homey v5
