Yeah, I admit that's probably a little less fragile than my grep/cut solution. Still requires you to have jq or similar installed. I was expecting that for a tool called ast-grep, you could get it to give you grep-like output.

No. grep is not rewriting your code like ast-grep.

jq is a more venerable and established tool compared to ast-grep. I think it makes sense to assume users can handle JSON output, either via jq or custom bash script.
