I didn't see in the instructions anywhere a note about installing an Nvidia driver - I assume I should have one installed for this to work correctly?
Yes, you should. Hard to do any gaming without it anyway.
When using optimus-manager to switch to Nvidia my laptop completely freezes (not able to use control+alt+f1 etc).

@Askannz Sorry for the delay replying and thanks for your help - have been moving house 😄
I managed to get this working OK in the end. For anyone else in a similar situation see this thread: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/freeze-on-shutdown-and-switch-to-nvidia-graphics/67680/14
