I would try:

import unsafe "unsafe"
const msgSize = unsafe.Sizeof(jsonMsg)

or :

import (
    "encoding/binary"
    "fmt"
    "reflect"
)

    var j jsonMsg
<fill msg>
    r := reflect.ValueOf(j)
    size := binary.TotalSize(r)

and figure out some average size in memory per msg
then say we want to start with a baseline of a maximum of 100megs of ram used by the buffer, 100megs/size-of-msg should give a pretty good ballpark number for the amount of msgs to keep buffered

from mig.
