I'm open for changing this to your first solution. Could you tell me which languages that are and could you provide those translations, because I obviously cannot speak every language ;).

The locales are 'cs-CZ' and 'ru-RU' and the translations would be just full month names. I'm not sure if there won't be any overflow issues due to longer text, but at least currently, Czech locale has "long" month_abbrs anyway and they seem to be displayed ok.
I haven't researched yet, if it'll work like this, but I think it should:
// Locale.cs-CZ.DatePicker
...
'months_abbr': Locale.get('Date.months'),
...

Closed by fe1b805 - It is now possible to set the day and month abbreviations manually as well as the picker title bars
