The problem seems to be in the environment.
I compiled s3backer 1.3.1 in Mint 9 and 1.3.3 in Ubuntu 12.04.
I tried to compile s3backer 1.3.3 in Mint 9 and then the mounting worked.

Thanks for the info. If you figure out specifically what the problem was please
update this issue.
I don't have use/access to Ubuntu so can't debug this directly myself.
There may however be some people on the mailing list who could help, etc.
