I suppose the auto updated URL for downloading the latest version still points to 2.2.3

It might not be an elegant solution, but we can get the latest linux version from the source of the vlc download page.
wget -q "https://www.videolan.org/vlc/#download" -O - | grep -o -E '"Linux","latestVersion":"([^"#]+)"' | cut -d'"' -f6
at the moment it returns "2.2.4"
The link to download would then be "http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/$VER1/$LATEST"
