I believe a correct approach will be to fix versions in the changelog to match semver.
You may also add a note in it explaining the change, example
from git-release.
I think you are completely right. So i already solved this, by fixing the versions in the changelog. It would only be helpful to explain this in the README.md, to prevent that People like me waste to mutch time figuring that out.

I am sorry that you were confused with that, but the readme states it clearly with:
Parse Tag to match Semantic Versioning
explains the tag scheme, and
Add changes to CHANGELOG.md in the following format (according to keepachangelog.com)
explains the changelog format which in place adheres to semver.
Anyway, we have it documented now with that issue here 😊
