I should follow up and say there is a new configuration option ITemplateServiceConfiguration.AllowMissingPropertiesOnDynamic, which when set to true, will chain null-returning dynamic lookups which will stop the compiler complaining. This is for properties only and only current for the root Model not the ViewBag. Considering extending this functionality to the viewbag if need be.
