That is tricky to fix in XeTeX without breaking placement of integral indices. I can proved a solution that would work OK in LuaTeX/MS Word but the indices placement will be badly broken in XeTeX.

We also have upright integrals (with fontspec option StylisticSet=8), do they look any better for you?

This is related to latex3/unicode-math#40.

Do you have any idea if this part of XɘTeX is ever going to be worked on?

AFAIK, Jonathan Kew (original XeTeX developer) is no longer working, and apart from microtype work last year by Hàn Thế Thành last year, it seems no body else is working on it.

Sorry that I never replied to this! This option does make the spacing much better, thanks (although the integral symbol is still generally ugly, but obviously that's not your fault!). I couldn't get LuaTeX to work with LyX (also not your fault!) but in theory it is compatible, so if I want to use xits again I'll try that. (For now I'm just using pdfTeX with Times for text and Utopia for maths, which works well enough.)
