It should not be required if you just want to look at the notebook. However, some of the sections use an IPython extension which tries to compile Boost.Python code, so of course you'll need boost.python for that. Honestly, though, you shouldn't expect that to work unless you're willing to invest some time into it; I got it to the point where it Works For Me (tm), but no further.
