Thanks, yeah, we've run into this on Squeeze as well. In our upstream repo (https://github.com/UpstandingHackers/hammer/) we've fixed things so that only the 'make test' target relies on glib or pkg-config, but at this time we don't plan to backport the test harness. I'll make sure a note of this ends up in the user guide (forthcoming).
