Which browser or application? You must configure your fonts to prefer it. See https://github.com/eosrei/twemoji-color-font/blob/master/linux/fontconfig/56-twemoji-color.conf

I'm having the same issue. Color works well with Firefox but I only get outlines inside terminal (using termite). Same thing with GTK applications (for example, file open\save dialog in Firefox), they only display outlines of emoji's.

I have that font config enabled.

$ fc-match -s serif
VeraSe.ttf: "Bitstream Vera Serif" "Roman"
TwitterColorEmoji-SVGinOT.ttf: "Twitter Color Emoji" "Regular"
...

$ fc-match -s sans-serif
Vera.ttf: "Bitstream Vera Sans" "Roman"
TwitterColorEmoji-SVGinOT.ttf: "Twitter Color Emoji" "Regular"
...

$ fc-match -s monospace
VeraMono.ttf: "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono" "Roman"
TwitterColorEmoji-SVGinOT.ttf: "Twitter Color Emoji" "Regular"
...

Thanks but I don't recall Font Awesome having emoji's.
Would that solve emoji color issue? Or did you mean you dropped using emoji?

This is isn't what I'm trying to solve but thanks anyway.
I've tried Noto Color Emoji and it did actually work and render as expected (even inside terminal) with color.

If you still want to have color emoji, then you can install them with emerge noto-emoji (assuming you are still using gentoo).
